We are thrilled to retain our seal of approval from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) following a three-day focused compliance and educational quality inspection in January 2025. The three-day inspection in January, involving four inspectors from ISI, was comprehensive and rigorous, and the result is a glowing report on the work of all areas of the school.
ISI is the Independent Schools Inspectorate. It is appointed by the Department for Education to inspect association independent schools in England. The inspections report on the extent to which the statutory Independent Schools Standards and other applicable regulatory requirements are met.
The inspectors visited Elmhurst between 28 and 30 January, scrutinising compliance and assessing the quality of standards relating to:
Leadership, management and governance
Education, training and recreation
Pupils’ physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing
Pupils’ social and economic education and contribution to society
Safeguarding
Inspectors carried out a number of activities including lesson observations, meetings with students, key members of staff and Governors, tours of the school, observation of students’ behaviour, and scrutiny of students’ work throughout the inspection days. All accomplished and well-respected educationalists, the inspectors observed a range of artistic and academic classes to endorse and validate the outstanding work of staff and students.
The report, released today, describes the high-quality provision at the school, as well as the excellent support and exceptional facilities. It states that “students’ health and wellbeing are given the highest priority within the framework of producing dancers fit for the ballet industry” and that they are“highly motivated, extremely focused, act responsibly and take personal accountability for their actions and development.” The inspectors also comment on the students’“mutual respect for all”, and confirm they are“aspirational and actively engaged in all aspects of school life.”
Jessica Ward, Principal, said, “I am delighted to report that Elmhurst Ballet School passed its recent ISI inspection, in whichall required standards were passed. The results further illustrate our determination to deliver the highest standard of dance training, combined with a strong academic education in a nurturing environment. This report highlights that and more. A source of particular pleasure was that the inspectors really understood and ‘got’ our school and our mission.
My sincere thanks go to the outstanding staff here at Elmhurst, all of whom played their part in this successful inspection with their hard work.I am incredibly lucky to work with such an incredibly passionate and dedicated team of professionals.
I could not be prouder of our entire school community as we go from strength to strength. Our students are fantastic, and the inspectors noted this when they visited. Sending our students off well-trained, well-educated, and equipped for the next stage of their lives is my most profound privilege as Principal.”
Jim Harris, Chairman of the Governors added, “We are extremely pleased with the ISI report findings, it reflects the ambitions of the Senior Leadership Team and the hard work of the school community. We continue to strive to always provide outstanding, forward-looking dance training and academic education for the students in our care.
I would like to congratulate everyone at the school on this glowing report. I was incredibly proud to be able to share with the inspectors our approach to best practice in running a happy, thriving and successful school which fully meets all the compliance standards. We pride ourselves in providing the best possible environment in which our students can flourish and achieve.
As a community, we have worked hard to put student wellbeing at the heart of everything we do and to foster a culture of kindness. It is a source of great pride to see these strengths highlighted in the report, which is the result of talent, hard work, and dedication on the part of students and staff every day.”
