Elmhurst Students Shine at the Birmingham Hippodrome for Sir Peter Wright's Centenary
Our students took to the stage of Birmingham Hippodrome on Thursday 18 June for a truly historic occasion, joining Birmingham Royal Ballet in a special performance celebrating the life and legacy of Sir Peter Wright in his 100th year.
The spectacular evening brought together artists, audiences and members of the wider ballet community to honour one of the most influential figures in British ballet. Featuring highlights from Sir Peter's celebrated productions and Birmingham Royal Ballet's first performance of The Green Table in more than three decades, the event paid tribute to a career that has shaped generations of dancers and audiences alike.
For Elmhurst, the occasion marked a particularly significant milestone. For the first time in the school's history, the entire student body performed on the Birmingham Hippodrome stage, proudly celebrating the centenary of Elmhurst's Vice President and former Birmingham Royal Ballet Artistic Director.
Students rose to the occasion magnificently, performing with energy, passion and professionalism to open the evening with a Grand Défilé. Their contribution formed a memorable part of the celebrations and reflected the strong connection between Elmhurst, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Sir Peter himself.
Reflecting on the evening, Artistic Director Robert Parker said: "I want to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks for everyone's input into the Sir Peter Wright Centenary performance at the Hippodrome. It was such a special occasion, and to see the students performing so beautifully literally brought tears to my eyes.
A massive thanks to the artistic staff for preparing and rehearsing the students in preparation for the show - not a fingernail or eyelash out of place. Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Stage Manager commented afterwards on the students' impeccable behaviour in the wings and the mature, professional way they dealt with unfamiliar conditions.
Carlos Acosta personally thanked the school during his speech on stage following the performance and asked me to pass on his congratulations to the students and staff.
